Should Schools Provide Moral Education for Youth?
Moral
values have an important role on training the youth who have humanitarian
qualifications. Moral values lead to the youth in order to have positive
behaviors and to be accepted in the community. Parents are primarily
responsible for their children’s moral education. Parents should follow closely
children’s behavior development which starts to form from the age of 3-4. Also,
they should begin to give children moral values from the age of 7-8 when
children begin to understand moral concepts. In fact, children’s moral
education starts in the family at first. Despite of this, schools should provide moral education as families are insufficient for it.
First,
some people may think that moral education should be left to parents and it
cannot be provided in the school. They think that school is a place that
students learn only things in the books. Actually, schools are places that
children start to socialize and to understand what is true or wrong.
Individuals can socialize by connecting with other people. In this process,
environment is an effective factor to form children’s moral values. When the
youth communicate with others, they can learn something such as how to speak in
public, how to behave to elders. In the school, students can learn something
which they did not learn from parents. Schools are places for not only teaching
but also education.
Second,
responsibility awareness has an important role in view of moral education.
Everyone has some responsibilities as an individual. Some people say that
responsibility awareness is acquired in the family. However, it is acquired in
the school thanks to moral education. The youth perform their responsibilities
and it materializes as a result of moral education which is provided in the
school. For example, students’ tasks which are given by teachers arouse sense
of responsibility in students. They are aware of their duties and know that
they will be punished if they do not their tasks. On the other hand, they know that their family
will be insightful and will not get angry if they do not their tasks. As a
result, youth avoid fulfilling their responsibilities. Therefore, moral
education should be provided in the school.
Third, moral education has an important factor to be conscientious
individual. Some people say that children can learn social values and attitudes
in the family and can be sensitive to these. Some of children grow up in a
family which is not sensitive to these social values. As a result, moral
education should be provided in the schools. Thanks to this, individuals can be
more sensitive events which happen their around. For example, individual who
learnt being fair about any subject in the school can be more conscientious
when he/ she comes across any situation.
To sum up, moral education is a long progress which lasts from birth to death. Even though it starts in the family, it is not left to family. As families are inadequate for children’s moral education, it should be continued in
the schools. Children can acquire moral education by socializing, having
responsibility and being conscientious. Thanks to school, children can have these
facilities which are basic for moral education. Therefore, moral education
should be provided in the schools.
Thanks to this, individuals can be more sensitive (prep) events which happen their around.
